Reflecting the Light of Jesus

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

The sacraments: preaching of the word, the Lord’s Supper, and baptism are “Lights” to us in a dark world. These things preach the gospel to us.

Friends shine the Light of the gospel in our lives too. They pick us up when we fall, remind us of who we are when we forget, and scold us when we’re stubborn. We watch how our best friend deals with a broken marriage, wayward child, or dying parent and we see the Lord Jesus through their perseverance and compassion. We watch a loving mother discipline her child in front of her friends (not the easiest thing to do) and we remember the gospel is not only comforting but there is a call as well. These responses cause us to remember who Jesus is, how much we love him, and how much he loves us.

Who shines the gospel on your life? Whose life has been a lamp unto your feet and a light on your path? Who has helped you find Jesus during a difficult time?

When you were depressed, who sat with you to relive the loneliness? When you wanted to hibernate and sulk in your anger and bitterness, who pushed you beyond yourself to forgive and love? When you were paralyzed with fear, whose presence gave you courage?

Does this person know his or her responses helped you see Jesus and how? Call, text, or email your friend and express how you love Jesus more because of his or her life.

But encourage one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” Hebrews 3:13
